The bell ball is an important sports equipment for blind and visually impaired people. Inside the ball there are small bells that enable blind and visually impaired people to recognise the position of the ball in the room when it is in motion.
About the video: The video shows a bell ball in motion and at standstill. Please be sure to switch on the audio!
This brings us to the first problem: What could be done to make it possible for blind and visually impaired people to find a stationary bell ball in the room without human assistance?
A popular game for blind and visually impaired people is “goalball”. This game is part of the Paralympics and often involves a lot of action.
Given the high speed with which this game and also other games, such as football, are played with the bell ball, the following technical questions also arise:
How can a technical assistance system be easily implemented that e.g.
- changes the pitch at different speeds?
- changes the colour of the bell ball at different speeds?
- enables louder ringing in the presence of stronger background noise?
- automatically adjusts the colour of the ball to the background to make the ball easier to see for visually impaired people?
